Last year, Warden High School teachers Mitch Stanberry, Jessica Cole, and Angela West joined the prestigious five-year Master Teacher Fellowship in Central Washington University’s WA-STELLAR (Washington STEM Teachers Engaging in Leadership, Learning, and Research) program. This program aims to revolutionize STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) education, making it more engaging and impactful. On December 1st, Warden High’s STELLAR teachers invited members of the community to showcase their efforts.
Why is this important to students and parents? Simply put, this matters to Warden families in simplest terms because through collaborative efforts of staff, Warden students are achieving academically. Without much fanfare, these Warden STELLAR teachers have been quietly helping students improve their test scores to rank some of the highest, if not the highest in the Columbia Basin. Notably, during last year’s Washington State Math Council’s (WSMC) Math Competition, Warden teams took first, second, and third place in Division 2, and the school secured 8th place at the state level in the High School Math Competition.
Who was involved? The program, leveraging resources from the grant and STELLAR initiative, brought together prominent educators from CWU, Granger, and across the Warden School District. Attendees included:
From Central Washington University (CWU):
Mark Oursland - STEM teach advisor. and instructor at CWU.
Allyson Rogan-Klyve - Chair of the STEM Teach department at CWU
Brent Handcock - professor for the STEM Teach department and STELLAR researcher.
From Granger:
Principal from Granger High school
Two High school math teachers
One middle school math teacher
From Warden:
STELLAR program fellows
Superintendent
Dean of Students
Director of Teaching and Learning
Director of Special Education
High school principal
TOSA coaches
Communications Administrator
What happened? The day was a collaborative event at Warden High School, where university professors and local educators provided a unique learning opportunity, fostering a shared educational experience. It was an excellent opportunity to highlight Warden students' achievements and the value of student-staff cooperation. It showcased the quality of relationships built with students and the trust they place in staff.
Future Plans: The program will soon welcome student teachers, immersing them in hands-on teaching and contributing to a dynamic learning environment. This initiative is essential for developing innovative teaching methods and engaging students in meaningful ways.
Impact: The program extends beyond learning STEM subjects; it inspires teachers to excel, thereby helping students reach their full potential. The WA-STELLAR program is a testament to these WHS teachers' commitment to advancing STEM education, connecting educators, students, and the community in a shared goal of educational excellence. The Warden School District is grateful for this initiative, and we anticipate more collaborative opportunities to help students unlock their potential in the coming months.
